Apothecary and botanist Basilius Besler (1561-1629) was responsible for the most celebrated collection of botanical illustrations ever published. The "Hortus Eystettensis" is the pictorial record of the gardens of the Prince-Bishop of Eichstatt, created in the early 1600s. This is a fine-art giclée reproduction of an antique Besler print from the William Stafford archives, given a contemporary blue-and-sepia coloring. The image is printed on aged paper showing a deckle edge. The gesso-and-wood frame was hand-finished using 17th-century Florentine techniques and hand-painted in lemon silver.
