Thomas Jefferson is perhaps best known for writing the Declaration of Independence--but there is so much more to discover. An architect and naturalist, he played the violin, spoke six languages, conducted archeological investigations of Native American mounds, and started the Library of Congress. Jefferson was the country’s first foodie--he grew over fifteen kinds of peas and advocated a mostly vegetarian diet. He doubled the size of the country and sent Lewis and Clark to explore it. Kalman also shows that monumental figures can have monumental flaws--although Jefferson called slavery an "abomination," he owned two hundred slaves.
