Why We Love This

This exquisite copperplate engraving was designed by Benard Direxit in 1791 for the seminal work Histoire Naturelle Botanique, coauthored and published by Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, France's most famous naturalist and an early proponent of evolution, and a forerunner of Charles Darwin. Direxit's images of oysters are among the finest examples of 18th-century naturalist engravings. Unframed.
