A man rides a galloping horse in a series of photographs by Eadweard Muybridge, who is credited as being the father of motion pictures. Born in England in 1830, Muybridge moved to the United States in 1852 and was subsequently commissioned by the government to take pictures of the Pacific Coast. His landscape photographs of California earned him international recognition in his own time, while his experiments in photographing rapid action have become landmarks in the history of photography.
