Gifts for the Holiday Host
As the party planner for some of the world’s most high-profile weddings, openings, and events, Colin Cowie can handle anything with effortless style—even the stress of the holidays.
With the right accessories and attitude, Cowie shows us how to make hosting and celebrating all the fun it’s meant to be.
From The Oprah Winfrey Show’s 25th anniversary affair to Kim Kardashian’s postwedding bash, the founder of ColinCowieWeddings.com doesn’t bat an eye at a 2,000-person guest list and knows how to make even the grandest of events feel inviting. “No matter how many guests you are expecting,” says Cowie, “the most important thing is to make people feel welcome.”
Setting the Table
For holiday dinners, Cowie likes to design a versatile table, “something that can look great for the full 12 days of Christmas.” First he creates a foundation with a bed of moss, a velvet runner, or a shiny surface before adding candles, followed by simple, hardy arrangements like a single stem of green anthurium in mint julep cups (pictured).
Tip: For a truly no-fuss display, replace flowers with bowls of beautiful ornaments.
Cowie's five tips to keep the holiday stress at a minimum and fun at a maximum:
1. Shop online; it makes the process so much easier.
2. Set the table and pull serving pieces the day before.
3. Create a self-serve bar with a premixed specialty cocktail.
4. Take your favorite party playlist and simply add a dozen holiday songs.
5. Leave yourself at least a half-hour before guests arrive for personal prep. If you are feeling calm, confident, and cheery, guests will follow suit.
For Infinite Family
A portion of Cowie’s sale will benefit Infinite Family, the web-based mentorship program for South African children affected by HIV and poverty. “With just a weekly video chat, this program has the ability to boost a child’s communication skills, self-confidence, and chance for success,” says Cowie, who is also Infinite Family's global ambassador.
