    • Mix It Up

To create the irresistibly inviting mood in this private sitting room in Beverly Hills’ historic Greystone Mansion, Martyn used a blend of orientalist-inspired pieces and patterned fabrics in a harmonious palette.

      Take-Home Tip:

Mingle patterns and styles for visual interest and energy in a room, but make sure there’s a common denominator, like color, to keep things unified.

      • Small Space, Big Style

In Martyn’s dining room, an outdoor porch in the 1920s, the space is intimate but the drama is high. “I used block color on the floor, repeated it in a stencil on the ceiling and referenced it in the unusual fabric of the drapery,” says Martyn. “Never be afraid of mixing scale, especially in a small space—think big!”

        Take-Home Tip:

Don’t ignore the little spaces. Playing with scale and color can make them matter and can have a surprising impact in a room or nook that might otherwise have faded away.

        • Bring It Together

In this opulent room, texture and diffused color unify an eclectic aesthetic and make it timelessly elegant. “This space is about layering,” says Martyn. “The palette is pulled from the tapestry and repeated in the upholstery choices. The lush pillows create an instant sense of comfort, and the unexpected zebra ottoman adds a wonderful modern vibe into the mix.”

          Take-Home Tip:

Be eclectic, not hectic: Take your color cues from an important piece—like the tapestry in this room. When your palette is reined in, you can take more liberties when you layer.

          • Tell a Color Story

Let your personality shine through your palette choices. Here, for model Cheryl Tiegs’s living room, Martyn started with her favorite color, blue, then pulled colors from the rug into the pillows and the rest of the decor. “Then I always like to add a surprise color, in this case hot pink, just to spice it up and stop it from feeling too decorated,” he says.

            Take-Home Tip:

Following some basic design rules—like staying within palette or pattern confines—allows you to spice things up by breaking a few others.

            • Flight of Fantasy

This comfy (and somewhat decadent) oasis of chinoiserie chic was a guest room in Martyn’s home that he transformed into a sanctuary for himself. “The repeated pattern is very traditionally French and was popularized in France in the 18th and 19th centuries,” he says. “I love this Old World Weavers fabric, as it has the feeling of an exotic escape.” You can take the plunge too—every item here is available in Martyn’s sales today.

              Take-Home Tip:

Keep it grounded: By simply adding bold stripes to this whimsical vignette, Martyn brought a touch of contrast, power, and contemporary flair to the room.

              • Tableau of Texture

A masterpiece of artisanal tradition, an elaborately carved Indonesian panel becomes an alluring backdrop for cushions from Martyn’s collection. “The pillows mirror the carved-panel effect and repeat the Balinese vibe,” says Martyn. “The layered effect of the multiple patterns creates a textured unison that feels both ethnic and comfortable.”

                Take-Home Tip:

Keep themes subtle and unexpected. Pattern can echo texture, and texture can pick up pattern, creating a unifying richness. Even well-placed flowers can play a part.
