      • Color Your World

“One of my favorite decorating tricks is to hang antique textiles as artwork,” says Kathryn, who fashioned these vibrant curtains from Mexican serapes stitched together with her own red fabric in her Ojai, California home. Antique sconces, discovered in London, light the way.

        Take-Home Tip:

Don’t think of hallways as mere paths to somewhere else. A perfect venue for interesting antiques and vintage finds, eye-catching textiles, and fabulous one-off chairs, they can become a welcoming destination in and of themselves.

        • Vagabond Blues

“Pillows are to a room what scarves are to fashion—they’re the ultimate decorating accessory,” says Kathryn, who punctuated this crisp, chic guest room with a variety of patterns united by a palette of cool, clean blues and whites.

          Take-Home Tip:

A guest room should convey a host’s style and spirit but leave a little room for your guests’ own personality. Infused with Kathryn’s signature medley of textiles and worldly flair, this room’s edited palette makes it a soothing sanctuary for all.

          A Charmed Visit
          • A Royal Affair

“If I could collaborate with anyone, living or dead, it would be Marie Antoinette,” says Kathryn. No doubt the queen would have approved of the regal yet rustic vibe in the gorgeous master bedroom. The dramatic four-poster bed was found, appropriately enough, in a palace in Rajasthan.

            Take-Home Tip:

Harmonize it! Even used subtly, color is a great way to bring seemingly disparate components together. The rich red of the metal table and chairs is picked up by the pattern on the Indian bedspread.

            A Royal Affair
            • A Tasty Mix

Latin American, Moroccan, and African accents create a colorful kitchen that’s warm, welcoming, and conducive to creativity and conviviality. A fun patchwork dhurrie sets the foundation for flea-market chairs and an antique table from Lief. Overhead, a shabby-chic chandelier breaks the rules—beautifully—with myriad mismatched shades.

              Take-Home Tip:

Inviting, colorful, unexpected, and functional are the right attributes to keep in mind when planning your kitchen. It’s an oasis of creativity, and prone to wonderful messes. An overly decorated, rigid scheme will only frustrate you.

              A Tasty Mix
              • Sweet Dreams

Pretty in pinks (that are anything but saccharine), this bedroom juxtaposes an elaborately turned four-poster bed with an abundance of vividly patterned pillows, bedding, and textiles. A brightly upholstered chaise longue only adds to the welcoming bohemian harmony.

                Take-Home Tip:

Your bedroom is the most personal room in your home, and one of the easiest to personalize and change out. Collecting bedspreads, pillows, and other textiles you love means you can easily change things up seasonally, or whenever the mood strikes.
