Iso Clocks by LeeLABS

    • The Inspiration

“We loved seeing the medieval designs (such as the one shown here) in the Metropolitan Museum’s new Islamic galleries. For this clock series, we wanted to overlay patterns like that, turn them on a grid, and lock them into place. The effect is like looking through a kaleidoscope.”

      • The Process

“Once we finish the digital drawing, we translate it into a reusable mold. We mix the concrete by hand—it’s so important to get the right mix, one with a beautiful matte finish that can make very thin lines. We pour in the concrete, and once it sets, we sand the piece into the finished clock face.”

        • The Effect

“A handmade object shows a real mastery of a craft. Not only is there a story behind something made by hand, but the quality can be much better. I think that’s the new-old American way right now—that people really want to invest in well-made things and know where they came from.”
