    • The Beginning

In 2001, after shuttering his Internet company, Thatcher spent a few days hunting for rare books with a friend in New England. “I was trying to come up with a big idea for what to do next,” he says. “I went back to LA, where I was living then, and went to an estate sale, picked up two books, and sold them. I was immediately hooked.” And so Juniper Books was started.

      • The Book Covers

In addition to sourcing books, Thatcher began designing charming covers for them. “I have an affinity for 18th-century engravings, 19th-century book bindings, and 20th-century book jackets,” he says. The elephant on the Hemingway set (left) was the first image he translated onto covers. “It was way too cool to keep hidden inside a book.”

        • The Custom Libraries

Combining his design skills with his knack for hunting down books, Thatcher eventually started assembling libraries for private homes. “My work ranges from curating classical leather-bound libraries to much more modern and colorful creations,” he says. “People can personalize their home in an economical manner and with infinite possibilities with books.”

Since then he’s worked with decorators, restaurants, and even hotels. He recently completed a library at The NoMad, a boutique hotel in New York City (far left). “I love it when I can design or curate a collection of books that fits perfectly into a home library or other project in a way that a designer or homeowner didn’t really think was possible,” he says.
