A Creative Space
One must-have for Chris Benz? “Great pieces for entertaining that naturally lend themselves to storytelling,” says the designer, who cites Wes Anderson as his dream collaborator and likes to build a space around high-impact pieces. One glimpse at his eclectic studio—a kinetic oasis of things vintage, colorful, personalized, and personally inspiring—bears that out. Among his treasures: a pair of pale-blue movie lights (an eBay find), originally purchased for presentations and now a permanent part of the decor.
Benz’s favorite decorating advice is “Do exactly and only what you want and know how to do,” and the wonderfully idiosyncratic vignettes around the studio—as inspirational as they are inspired—are a testament to his singular style and personal point of view. From far left: an evocative yellow arrangement that was “dyed to match” (“nothing is an accident,” says Benz) and a Chris Benz doll, a 30th-birthday gift.
Gallery of Possibilities
If a picture is worth a thousand words, Benz’s extensive studio collection offers a lifetime of stories to fuel the creative juices. “It’s really the story of the brand and our relationships over time,” says the designer. “The selection runs the gamut from a photograph of my father in the '70s in front of his Corvette to paintings from friends to some of our favorite leading ladies, punctuated by a vintage print.”
