Room in Bloom

    • Soften Up

A soft, open pattern with lots of white feels casual. Use it to counter the heavier look of dark-stained floors and furniture. These floral patterns lighten up a space and make it feel airy, and will also temper a room that feels masculine without going overboard on girly.

Tip: Natural elements such as plants and wicker play up the outdoor feel of floral furniture.

      • Get Happy

Floral patterns are surprisingly versatile. A modern space with hard surfaces such as cement, steel, and glass get a lift in mood from a bright and cheery floral print. Bolder colors are a wise choice as they feel modern against a minimal backdrop.

Tip: Try a little at a time. One or two chairs in a bold floral print are just enough to liven up the space without taking over.

        • Keep It Traditional

A bedroom is an ideal place to try the romantic feel of traditional floral prints. Tight patterns that seem ornate, including chinoiserie styles, are elegant. These styles work best on larger items, such as a headboard or a chair, where the full scope of the print can be appreciated.

Tip: Keep the look from feeling fussy by pairing with a simple striped flat-weave rug and solid-color drapes.

          • Go Graphic

A large-format floral print is lively and especially fun when painted onto a piece of furniture. Try using a floral chest of drawers in a transitional space, such as a landing or an entry, where the piece will provide both needed storage and a graphic pop.

Tip: Floral-painted furniture can stand on its own. Surround it with a simple, understated rug and muted, metal accessories.
