      • Building Beauty: The Alchemy of Design

        Living History

“I love an empty canvas,” says Michael S. Smith. “The most interesting houses are the ones in which you get a sense of a person, a family, or a space through a series of interesting ideas.” Like a textured minimalist tableau, this home tells a story. The floors throughout the first level of the home are made of pietra serena, the blue-gray stone used to build Florence and a favorite of Michael’s. In the foreground, framed by the stone, a circa A.D. 400 mosaic adds a museum-caliber note that feels surprisingly modern.

          Room with a View

With the abundance of its verdant surroundings functioning as a lush and natural backdrop, alfresco furniture with clean, modern lines sets a scene that lets the location sing. “The most sophisticated design solution is often the most simple,” says Michael. Here, the pergola creates an outdoor living space. A Greek frieze, a nod to Smith’s penchant for classicism, hangs above the large fireplace.

            Designed for Dreaming

With an elegantly reined-in palette and plenty of sunshine, this gallant master bedroom is a perfect showcase for Michael’s signature blend of traditional classicism and modern American comfort. A silvered nine-light chandelier picks up the silvered posts of the Anglo-Indian-style canopy bed, and delicate embroidery—from the hand-stitched tree-of-life motif on the Indian bed hanging to the floral embellishments on the curtains—creates a delicate harmony, and a setting conducive to bucolic dreams.

              Drama After Dark

“I love to use fabrics with classic patterns, comfortable textures, and bold graphics to wake up a room,” says Michael. And, as in this case, to put it to sleep as well. When the sun sets on this spectacular bedroom, it turns the room into a three-dimensional Dutch still life. The carved mahogany canopy bed, as cozy as it is stately, is a private sanctuary generously draped in pleated linen.
