Designed for Living
Hayes’s striking pieces are made with solid maple framing, double-dowelled construction, and hand-matched custom stains. Whether it’s the graceful curve of a chaise arm or the precisely spaced line of nail heads on a sofa, an attention to detail defines the designer’s portfolio. “We’ll make a prototype four or five times just to get the right pitch on the seat,” says Hayes. “Not only does a piece need to look pleasing and have the right proportions, but it must also be comfortable.”
Hayes brings an artist’s eye to the design process, reducing classic furniture shapes to their most elemental forms, then layering on inspired touches. For the Ava Lounge, this means a surprisingly plush seat back “that hits you in all the right places,” says Hayes. The sexy swoop of the Marion Chaise adds pizzazz to a foyer or a bedroom. And with a single, extra-deep seat cushion, the Henry Sofa can accommodate the entire family on movie night as well as double as a guest bed in a pinch.
