Making Scents

    • OUI

      Joy of Soy

Angela Hodgkinson, who lives in Oklahoma City, pours her artisanal soy-based candles (all natural, no petrochemical stabilizers) into whimsical cups that she designs and local ceramicists create and throw. “I love the dual functionality of the pieces,” she says. “They live on after the candle burns out. Since the ingredients are all safe, you can use the ceramic for drinking or as a planter.”

      • Everyw'air

        By the Numbers

Agnes Baddoo’s aspirational air sprays, made with essential oils and colloidal silver, aromatically elevate everything from your kitchen to your car to your yoga mat. The simply rendered digits on each bottle correspond to the numerological number associated with the spray’s purpose: manifest (as in, make it happen), balance, and power. “I think of them as emotional palette cleansers,” says Baddoo, who lives in L.A., “like a reboot or refresh button.”

        • Le Feu de L’Eau

          Water Born

Instead of using molds, Le Feu de L'Eau designer Wendy Polish and London-born makeup artist Jo Strettell create their candles by pulling scented soy wax through water (hence the company name, which translates to “the fire of water). “We approach our product from the point of view of a fine artist,” says Polish, who co-founded the L.A. company in 2011. “We are inspired by texture, fragrance, color, photography, fashion and beauty.”

          • MCMC Fragrances

            Exotic Drops

At any given time the Brooklyn studio of sisters Anne Serrano-McClain and Katie McClain has some 300 fragrances available for the plucking, pink pepper from Africa, rose from Bulgaria, and jasmine from India among them. The pair blend their scents, both natural and synthetic, into candles, roll-on essential oils and eau du parfum sprays. “Fragrance is a powerful way to create atmosphere,” they say. “A favorite candle can make an evening.”
