As described by Genesee River

During the mid-1700s French weavers developed a “point” system to indicate the size of a blanket. These were traded in a range of 1 to 4 points, with increments of half-points. A common misconception is that each point indicated a quantity of beaver pelts, but the number of points represented the finished size of the blanket.
