Why We Love This

Vintage Japanese maru obi from Kyoto, worn by women for formal wedding ceremonies as a kimono sash. Peacocks resting on chrysanthemums are surrounded by the friends of winter or Sho-Chiku-Bai. Pine for longevity, bamboo for flexibility, and plum for pure spirit represent promise and good fortune for the newlyweds and adorn both sides of the obi. It can be used as a table runner or as a wall hanging. Taisho period, circa 1920s.

About Tansu Design

Inja Yang travels throughout Asia sourcing antiques for her 25-year-old business,Tansu Design. Her inventory of furniture ranges from Chinese horseshoe armchairs to blanket chests with iron hardware from her native Korea. Accessories are equally esoteric; visitors to her San Francisco showroom might see a colonial Santos head or Japanese saws transformed into sculpture. Tansu Design also creates custom furniture, translating the Asian aesthetic into modern pieces for today's home.
