As described by
Polk: The Man Who Transformed the Presidency and America by Walter R. Borneman. NY: Random House, 2008. Book Club Edition. 422 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. James K. Polk served only four years, pre-Civil War, and has been overshadowed by the events that followed. But he was a strong president who accomplished many reforms: a biography that fills in the gaps.
