As described by Sandra Whitman Antique & Old Chinese Rug

Chinese rug from the early 20th century. The field design has the appearance of an American rag rug and mimics weaving in Gansu, where leftover yarns were used. Exactly where this rug was woven is a mystery. It is the size of a Tibetan Khaden and has an unusual knot structure. Hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation. Provenance: William Lipton collection.

About the Seller

Sandra Whitman Antique & Old Chinese Rug

Sandra Whitman opened her gallery in 1996, after years of collecting. The gallery deals only in Chinese carpets/textiles and stocks quality pieces from all rug-making provinces of China. The inventory includes decorative and collectable rugs/textiles from the Ming dynasty to the Republic period. Chinese rug making is a practical art form undertaken to create coverings for floors, seats, and other objects. The gallery is a resource for the collector but understands that rugs are made to be used.
