As described by Bruce Kapson Gallery

Four Bears, wonderful example of a Navajo picture writing painting on muslin, 1947-1974. The Navajo medicine men used these paintings on muslin, which were done with the same earthen pigments used for the sand paintings, as a means of recording and handing down the symbols of this tradition.
