Why We Love This

Mark Tobey by William C. Seitz. New York: The Museum of Modern Art, 1962. 112 pages. Softcover. Based in Seattle from the 1920s, Tobey was part of a group of painters who came to be known as the Northwest School. Other members included Morris Graves and Kenneth Callahan. He's probably best known for his paintings employing "white writing" in abstract, all-over compositions.
