Why We Love This

Memoirs From the House of the Dead by Feodor Dostoevsky. NY: Oxford University Press, 1956. First printing in this translation, by Jessie Coulson. First edition thus. Book is fine, in a very good (minor edge wear, age darkened) dust jacket. First published in magazine form in 1861. A semi-fictional account of Dostoevsky's four-year term in prison for political protest. It is remarkable for his lack of bitterness and the moving descriptions of the living conditions of his fellows.
