Why We Love This

Mask, worn and danced with at okoroshi ceremonies, which involve religious rites for spirits or divinities of water (owu). These rites are widespread in southwestern and northern Igbo territory. This mask type has a forehead projection, which is reminiscent of a boat's prow, that actually represents a machete, a tool used in fieldwork and earlier as a weapon.
