Mr. Stubbs's career as a self-taught painter from obscurity in Liverpool to his arrival in London and the publication of the book The Anatomy of the Horse. Best known for his paintings of horses, he also painted lions, tigers, giraffes, monkeys, and rhinos, which he was able to observe in private zoos in London.
