Why We Love This

This beaded apron by the Ndebele is called jocolo. Jocolo is distinguished by five panels on the lower section. Such aprons are worn by the bride on their wedding day. A complete bridal costume includes a beaded headband, beaded front wedding veil, a beaded blanket (orare), the bridal cloak and a beaded bridal stick.

About Africa Direct

Africa Direct, Inc. is owned by Elizabeth Bennett and Sara Luther. African art, trade beads and ethnic jewelry are both business and passion for Sara and me. We started buying African art twenty years ago as gifts for our children, four of whom are adopted and are African-American. We had been active in anti-apartheid politics for some time.
