Why We Love This

Yoruba beaded crown with beads. The right to wear crowns is limited to approximately fifty Yoruba kings. Theoretically, only direct descendants of one of the 16 children of the god Orisha, first king of the Yoruba people, can wear them. Orisha blessed mankind with the use of beads, and their use is restricted to those whose spiritual powers enable them to move across the boundary that separates men from gods, the secular from the sacred.

About Africa Direct

Africa Direct, Inc. is owned by Elizabeth Bennett and Sara Luther. African art, trade beads and ethnic jewelry are both business and passion for Sara and me. We started buying African art twenty years ago as gifts for our children, four of whom are adopted and are African-American. We had been active in anti-apartheid politics for some time.
