Why We Love This

This steel-plate engraving was published in Samuel Meyrick’s Critical Enquiry into Ancient Armour in England from the Norman Conquest to Charles II. This work was the first survey of the subject attempted in such detail through illustrations. In addition to its rarity, the prints are exceptional in their hand coloring, not only using gold but also Gum Arabic to add perspective to the image. Published in London, 1824. Displayed in a silver and gesso Florentine frame.
