As described by Meyer Antiques

1750s engraving of shells from Diderot's Encyclopedia, with later hand-coloring. Denis Diderot (1713-1784) is best remembered as the general editor of the Encyclopedia and as one of its main contributors. The project absorbed most of his energies from 1750 to 1772. The Encyclopedia reflects its editor's hostility to religious authority, encapsulates the spirit of the French Enlightenment and is its most note-worthy product.
