A Parting Piece of Knowledge…

You can’t talk about the modernist aesthetic without mentioning the Bauhaus, a German art school in the early 20th century that encompassed the disciplines of fine art and industrial, product, and architectural design. Some of the most famous modernists of the time came out of the Bauhaus, including painter Paul Klee and architects Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the last of whom served as the school’s director before it was dismantled by the Nazi regime. Though the Bauhaus’s time was relatively short—it was operational only from 1919 to 1933—it has exerted an outsize influence, with its lean design principles serving as a foundation for architects, decorators, and product designers alike.
