Located in Midtown East Manhattan, the Phyllis Lucas Gallery/Old Print Center has one of the largest collections of antique prints and fine art in New York City. With a long and storied history, our gallery holds the distinction as the first publisher of Salvador Dali’s lithographs in America and has been among the foremost of the city's dealers in antique works on paper since its founding in 1928.
Why we love this
This hand-colored copperplate engraving from Germany shows a frontal view of pennyroyal, the famously minty herb often used in aromatherapy. Although printed in 1719, the style is reminiscent of the botanical prints of Basilius Besler from his masterwork Hortus Eysttensis, first published in 1613. The elaborate background reflects the emergence of European landscape painting and the importance of herbs in culinary culture, alchemy, and medicine at that time.
