Extremely rare exquisite pair of Japanese 6-panels Byobu Screens, depicting lovely landscapes and playful animals. Kano School tradition. Gouache and watercolor on gold leaf over paper. Silk borders, lacquered wood frames. Beautifully engraved metal hardware showing dark age patina. Paper on backs. Found in Japan in mid 20th c. Excellent condition - minor age wear, no damage to the paintings and backs, strong hinges, sturdy. Japan, Edo Period, c.1850s. Dimensions are for each screen unfolded.
