Signed lower right, 'G. Arsenius' for Carl Georg Arsenius (Swedish, 1855-1908) and dated 1888. A finely painted study of a Chihuahua shown seated on a Beaux-Arts style, coral-velvet sofa and gazing expectantly towards the viewer. A rare work by this noted artist who was much patronized by the aristocracy, including King Oscar II of Sweden. Arsenius is well-listed in all art reference works including Benezit and his work is held in public collections including the National Museum in Stockholm.
